Garo - Heir to Steel Armor Wrap-Up

It’s been a very enjoyable ride, but all good things come to an end. Heir to Steel Armor came to a close today after 12 great episodes. It’s been great to watch Garo in real-time on a week to week basis, and I have a lot of thoughts I wanna get out of my head. Now, since none of my friends like Garo, that means it’s time to bust out the ole keyboard and get to rambling on here.

Garo - Heir to Steel Armor Episode 1

2024 is here, and it has blessed us all with a new Garo series. Titled Garo: Hagane o Tsugu Mono, which can be taken as something along the lines of “The One Who Inherits Steel/Inheritor of Steel”, it celebrates the 10th anniversary of Garo: The One Who Shines in the Darkness. Of course, this means we get a new season with Wataru Kuriyama returning as Dougai Ryuga. The Actual Episode It’s only episode 1, so obviously not everything has been laid out for us, but this was a solid reintroduction to Ryuga that also didn’t waste time if we already knew him.

Getting Into Tokusatsu

I’ve had to help some people out with this recently and decided having a post up on here is way better than having to type up shit on twitter every time. What Is Tokusatsu and Why You should Give It a Try Tokusatsu are essentially Live-Action TV shows that make regular use of special effects, especially practical effects. An easy example of this would be rubber suits rather than CGI suits, although that’s not to say Tokusatsu shows don’t make use of CGI, especially today.

Jason David Frank

We’ve lost a lot of beloved people these last couple of years. MF DOOM, DMX, Kobe, Chadwick, Kazuki Takahashi, Kevin Conroy, Takeoff. All loved more than can be properly and competently expressed with words. This one stings the most for me, though. I was a Power Rangers kid. I loved Tommy Oliver. We all loved him. Every last one of us wanted to be the Green/White Ranger. Every last one.

Avataro Sentai Donbrothers First Impressions

During these past few months, the newest Super Sentai series, Donbrothers, began. My history with Sentai is way more on and off compared to my time with its sibling series, Kamen Rider. While I’ve generally consumed Kamen Rider content like an addict, I’ve only lightly dipped into Sentai and have yet to actually finish a series at the time of this writing. I got 9 episodes into Zenkaiger, which I honestly did enjoy a lot.

A Year of Tokusatsu

Back in 2018, I saw 2 anime that would send me down a rather large rabbit hole much later: SSSS Gridman and Garo: Vanishing Line. Those two shows are two of my favorite shows of all time. Gridman, with its wonderful characters and unmistakable “Saturday morning cartoon” vibes, and Garo, with its old school badass feeling and great familial character bonds. I loved those two shows and I still love them now.
